Day 5 · Fruit drawer

The fruit stall

Fruit goes in the other drawer, apart from the vegetables. It's not fussiness: many fruits (apple, pear, banana) release a natural gas, ethylene, that speeds up the ripening of everything next to them. Beside the veg, they spoil it sooner.

So: fruit in its drawer, veg in its own. And note, some fruit doesn't even want the fridge (bananas turn black in the cold, tomatoes lose flavour): those are better out, in the fruit bowl.

If your drawer has a humidity slider, turn it down a bit for fruit.

Art. V

«fruit on its own, in a separate berth; its gases would ruin the veg for all it's worth.»
